Take a Look Back at the Moment We Collected Soil Samples from Our Growing Area — for Quality, Traceability, and Something More

Earlier this year, Sunshine conducted an annual growing-area quality assessment at our longan orchard in Dong Thap, Vietnam — home to 20 hectares of Sunshine-owned longan orchards.

As part of the assessment, our technical team went directly into the field to review the actual conditions of the orchard and evaluate key factors that contribute to the quality and safety of the growing area.

A Morning at Our Growing Area 

A growing-area assessment is a field-based evaluation of the environmental and agricultural conditions that may influence crop quality, food safety, and production performance.

During the assessment, the technical team conducted an on-site evaluation of several key parameters, beginning with the ecological conditions and general hygiene status of the orchard.

The assessment also considered tree age and orchard condition, as these factors are relevant to crop management and the implementation of appropriate agricultural practices throughout the production cycle.

Particular attention was given to pest and disease management. The team reviewed the monitoring and control measures applied within the growing area to assess whether potential biological risks were being appropriately identified and managed.

Another critical component was the management of plant protection products (PPPs). Their selection and application were reviewed against applicable regulatory requirements, including the permitted lists and residue requirements relevant to both the country of production and the intended importing markets.

In parallel with the field inspection, soil and water samples were collected for laboratory analysis.

These samples provide analytical data that complements field observations and contributes to a more comprehensive assessment of the growing environment.

What Is Evaluated During a Growing-Area Quality Assessment? 

Growing-area quality is a multifactorial parameter. It cannot be determined through a single observation or laboratory result, but rather through the evaluation of multiple interacting components within the production system.

1. Ecological Conditions and Field Hygiene

The physical and ecological characteristics of a growing area form the environmental basis of agricultural production.

Field assessment considers factors such as the general condition of the orchard, field sanitation, surrounding environment, and tree age. Maintaining appropriate field hygiene is particularly relevant to minimizing conditions that may contribute to pest and disease development.

2. Pest and Disease Management

Effective pest and disease management relies on systematic monitoring, risk identification, and appropriate control measures.

Assessment of these practices helps determine whether potential biological hazards are being monitored throughout the production cycle and whether control measures are implemented in accordance with established agricultural protocols.

3. Plant Protection Product Control

Plant protection products are subject to regulatory controls concerning their authorization, application, and maximum residue limits (MRLs).

For export-oriented production, compliance must take into consideration the regulatory framework of the producing country as well as the requirements of destination markets.

This makes PPP management an important component of both food-safety assurance and export-market compliance.

4. Soil and Water Sampling

Soil and irrigation water are critical inputs within the agricultural production system.

Sampling provides an opportunity to obtain analytical data on relevant parameters and to establish a documented baseline for monitoring the growing environment.

When performed periodically, laboratory results can also contribute to trend analysis and risk-based agricultural management, rather than serving solely as a one-time verification.

Why Is Periodic Assessment Necessary? 

Agricultural production takes place within a dynamic biological and environmental system.

Growing conditions can vary over time due to changes in soil properties, water quality, climatic conditions, pest and disease pressure, orchard development, and farming practices.

Consequently, a growing-area assessment represents a snapshot of conditions at a particular point in time. Repeating the assessment periodically allows changes to be identified and evaluated against previous observations and analytical results.

For fresh fruit production, this is particularly relevant because many quality and food-safety attributes of harvested fruit are influenced by conditions established during the pre-harvest stage.

Regular monitoring therefore serves several purposes:

• Verification of agricultural practices against established requirements.
• Early identification of potential environmental and biological risks.
• Traceability of production conditions and management practices.
• Documentation to support quality and food-safety management systems.
• Continuous improvement of growing-area management.

In this context, quality control is not limited to inspection of the harvested product. It extends upstream into the production environment where many quality-related variables originate.

Working Towards GlobalG.A.P. Certification

Systematic growing-area assessment also provides a practical foundation for alignment with internationally recognized farm-assurance frameworks such as GlobalG.A.P.

GlobalG.A.P. incorporates requirements related to areas including food safety, traceability, environmental sustainability, worker health and safety, and responsible production practices.

For the longan growing area in Dong Thap, the ongoing assessment and documentation of agricultural practices form part of the broader process of strengthening farm-level management and working towards GlobalG.A.P. certification.

The underlying principle is straightforward: agricultural quality should be managed systematically, documented consistently, and verified through measurable practices.

From field inspections and plant protection product control to soil and water analysis, each component contributes to a more structured farm-management system.

And ultimately, these controls serve a common objective: to establish the conditions necessary for producing safe, consistent, and traceable longan from the growing area onward.
